Playing on a school tennis team is a once in a lifetime experience.
Players start by playing on no-cut Middle School tennis teams
then progress to play on Junior Varsity and Varsity school tennis
teams.
After graduating high school many tennis players look forward to
keep playing by being a members of a college tennis team. There used
to be one way to experience the thrill of playing on a college
tennis team.
Being recruited or passing tryouts to play on a college varsity was
available to the few college students who had the skill and
commitment. Most tennis players who did not have the skill, or did
not want to commit to the training and competition demands of a
varsity schedule, stopped playing tennis because no other
alternative.
Now everyone can play on a college tennis team. There are two ways
to play.
College Varsity Tennis:
Playing competition tennis on school tennis teams, and USTA
tournaments can provide opportunities to play on College Division
III, Division II, and Division I varsity college tennis teams.
Players may earn tennis scholarships being good students, tennis
team members, and by training and tournament competition.
College Club Tennis:
Competition on College Varsity Tennis teams may not be for everyone.
Many time tennis player choose not to commit to the demands of being
on a varsity tennis team but still want to experience the fun of
playing with fellow college student tennis players.
The total number of high school varsity tennis players in the U.S.
can fill six 50,000-seat football stadiums. But each year, only an
amount equal to half of one of those stadiums goes on to play
varsity college tennis. The majority stops playing tennis.
To keep these former high school players in the swing of things, the
USTA National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association,
Intercollegiate Tennis Association, and World Team Tennis have
partnered to offer “Tennis On Campus.” Through this collaborative
partnership, the program is gaining speed as it rolls into the
spring semester.
The Tennis On Campus program features coed teams participating in
intramural play and intercollegiate play on campuses nationwide. In
addition, the USTA currently works with approximately 300
universities and colleges to create or improve their intramural or
sport club tennis programs.
The United States Tennis Association Tennis On Campus program
provides local, sectional, and national competition for every
college tennis non-varsity tennis players.
The USTA Tennis On Campus program was started in 2004 with the goal
of providing a true national college tennis experience.
In 2006, the USTA Eastern Section, together with Joe Arias, Chairman
of the USTA Eastern Collegiate Tennis Committee, held the first
sectional championship in New Jersey with 6 teams from, Cornell,
Columbia, Syracuse. Eastern College Club Tennis has grown since to
include teams from over a dozen local colleges.
