The Suffolk County Junior Tennis League was
awarded the 2008 USTA Eastern Section Member Organization of the
Year Award.
The award was
presented to SCJTL Founder and Executive Director Joe Arias and his
wife Donna, along with SCJTL Player Development Coach and
Competition Tennis Camp Director Josh Wolfson at the 2008 USTA
Eastern Leadership Conference annual awards dinner in Westchester on
January 31, 2009.
The Member
Organization award is presented to t he USTA Eastern Section Member
Organization for outstanding service to its members in the field of
junior and adult tennis programs and for contributions to the local
tennis community.
The Suffolk
County Junior Tennis League (SCJTL) is a network of community based
sites and programs in Suffolk County, New York, founded in 1997,
dedicated to introducing Suffolk County youths to the lifetime sport
of tennis.
The SCJTL
mission is to enhance the quality of life in Suffolk County through
the lifetime sport of TENNIS.
Through its
flagship, SCJTL Summer League and fall Indian Summer League
programs, the SCJTL goal is to provide an all inclusive “playing”
experience to over 1000 new and existing junior players each summer
at 9 school sites throughout Suffolk County.
In 2006 the
SCJTL Summer League became one of 28 36/60 test sites in the USA for
the USTA Quick Start Tennis format. In 2008 SCJTL Summer League has
become a model Quick Start Tennis recreational Junior Team Tennis
program with a season ending Challenge featuring an appearance by
"Deuce", the mascot of the Suffolk County Tennis and Education
Foundation and non-profit 501(c)3 organization in Suffolk County
that sponsors and works closely with the SCJTL.
After the first
two years in existence, SCJTL expanded its scope to provide
affordable local competition and player development programs through
the SCJTL Competition Squad USTA Junior Team Tennis program and
SCJTL Tennis Academy, Competition Tennis Camp and Tennis Team
training camps.
Executive
Director Joe Arias, is a USPTA Pro 1 certified tennis professional,
finishing his last phase to complete his USTA High Performance Coach
and USPTA Player Development Specialist certification and Director
of Tennis of the Port Jefferson Country Club. Donna Arias, is a
fashion consultant for Grand Slam Tennis in Commack and Bolle'
Tennis Wear Representative.
Together, Joe
and Donna administrate the SCJTL along with a staff of over 40 Camp
and Summer and Indian Summer League Site Directors, Assistant Site
Directors, Site Assistant, and tennis camp coaches consisting of
school tennis team coaches, college tennis players, and high school
tennis playing students who also play in the SCJTL Summer League
Blue Division program.
Promoting the
goal of playing on school tennis teams leading to college varsity
and club tennis, SCJTL has played a part in getting hundreds of
Suffolk County kids playing on school tennis teams and to achieve
Long Island Regional and USTA Sectional rankings with many players
moving on to play college tennis.
